Specialists in orthopedic surgery at Chi Mei foundation hospital diagnose and treat disorders of bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves (the musculoskeletal system) in children and adults. The Department of Orthopedic Surgery comprises a multispecialty group of surgical, research and clinical doctors.Subspecialties within the department include joint reconstruction, pediatrics, sports medicine, trauma, spine, foot, hand, shoulder, elbow, and oncology. We serve with the technology needed to provide state-of-the-art diagnosis, outpatient treatment and rehabilitation for all types of musculoskeletal conditions.
Our team members:
Currently, there are ten full-term visiting staff (both surgical and orthopedic specialist with board certifications), from National Taiwan University Hospital, Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, LinKou, and National Cheng Kung University Hospital. They have expertise and technology of the various sub-specialties. Currently, we have eight residents and six nurse practitioners.
Our subspecialties:
Joint Reconstruction: total joint replacement of knee and hip for degenerative arthritis, secondary osteoarthritis due to avascular necrosis or congenital anomaly, rheumatic arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis. Specific implant device for peri-articular malignant tumor management and reconstruction.
Sports Medicine: give suggestion to prevent sport injury, make impression after physical examination and related assessments and discuss with patient about treatment options. Professional arthroscopic surgery to decrease damage of soft tissue and better post-operative recovery. Early intervention of specialized rehabilitation therapist in pre-operative and post-operative clinical care.
Spine Surgery: provide adequate clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning about compression fracture, spondylolsithesis, spondylolysis, herniated intervertebral disc, degenerative spine diseases, scoliosis, spine tumor……etc.
Traumatology: combine emergency department and intensive care unit to provide dedicated faculty and management for multiple trauma and critically ill patients. Tremendous experience with fractures. Highly integrated with the general surgery, and neurosurgery trauma teams.
Hand Surgery: specialize in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with hand injuries, such as Flexor and extensor tendon injuries, fractures and dislocations of the hand and wrist, nerve compression syndromes , rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis of the hand, tumors of the hand.
Foot & Ankle Surgery: more focus in the evaluation of clinical symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients, such as such as Hallux valgus, tarsal coalition, plantar fascitis, osteochondral lesion of talus, Achilles tendinitis, arthritis of foot and ankle, Charcot joint, hammer toe, posterior tibial tendon dysfunction.
Oncology: We have assigned one young visiting staff to Taipei Veterans General Hospital for oncology training, focusing on diagnosis and surgical skill training. This subspecialty will be well established in 2 or 3 years.
Pediatric Orthopedics: provide detailed information about evaluation, treatment, and prognosis of common pediatric disease, such as developmental dysplasia of the hip, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, Perthes disease, congenital anomalies, leg length discrepancy, physis injury, tumor…etc.
