Features of Chimei thoracic surgery department
Nowadays, we’re heading to a Minimal Invasive Surgery (MIS) age. The Department of Thoracic Surgery of Chimei Medical Center also has the same ambition. We put much effort to catch the trend. In 2006, our team first introduced Nuss procedure in south Taiwan. The surgery avoids a major incision in the anterior chest wall and gets a superior cosmetic result. In 2008, our team started routinely videothoracoscopic-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomy and esophagectomy. Since then, most of our surgery were performed in a MIS way. Nowadays, our team also have the ability to perform two incision and single incision VATS lobectomy in selected cases. The technical progress didn’t stop. In 2012, Chimei Medical Center first introduced the da Vinci robotic surgical system to the south Taiwan. Our team also started the very first robotic thoracic surgery at the same time. We’re the pioneer of robotic thoracic surgery in Taiwan and have plenty of robotic surgical experiences. And we still hold the record of largest number of robotic esophagectomy in Taiwan now. In cancer treatment, our team put much emphasis in team therapy. We have lung cancer committee and and esophageal cancer committee. The committees work on treatment protocol setup and result follow up. Also, the committees spend a lot of time to discuss the treatment plain of each patient. With the consensus of the treatment plain, we can make sure the plain is in right direction and avoid harm to the patient. In addition to the clinical services, our team also put much effort on patient safety, medical education and medical device research. We helped to set up the MIS training program in Chimei Medical Center. And YingChieh Su, MD is also a research consultant of Hiwin corp.. Our ambition is to offer the best clinical service of thoracic surgery to the patient in south Taiwan. Also, we wish to make our contribution to the patient safety, medical education and medical device research field.
