Origin

Professor Mao-Tsun Lin initiated the Cerebrocardiovascular Laboratory (CCV Lab) at the end of 2000, invited by former Dean Chi-Hsien Chan, leading a team of doctoral students from National Yang-Ming University to develop the necessary infrastructure for basic research. The CCV Lab was officially established in March of the following year. In 2016, his student, Professor Ching-Ping Chang, took over the CCV Lab. CCV Lab comprises nine full-time research assistants, one advisor (Prof. Mao-Tsun Lin), and a principal investigator (Prof. Ching-Ping Chang). We are committed to promoting innovative R&D and finding solutions to disease problems. We are dedicated to providing our doctors and colleagues with robust experimental design services and infrastructure support. We aim to facilitate the research journey from conception to dissemination, ensuring that each discovery has the most significant impact.

In the early period of the CCV Lab establishment, we held monthly laboratory meetings to help clinical physicians understand the importance of basic science research work. These meetings primarily focused on literature reviews of international journals and progress reports on experiments. They also included the design of experiments relevant to solving disease problems, combining comprehensive discussions between basic scientists and clinical physicians. These discussions generated enthusiastic responses from medical colleagues and sparked numerous creative ideas. The "From Bench to Bedside" conversations have continued for over 20 years. Under the guidance of Professor Lin, the research and development team has flourished in this innovative environment. Many PhD students and clinical physicians have established their labs, continuing the momentum of biomedical research.

Promote research and innovation and strengthen international exchange

Professor Mao-Tsun Lin emphasizes establishing fundamental knowledge, encouraging independent thinking, challenging authority, and valuing creativity. When clinical physicians propose resolving issues, they must return to the basics, starting with reading, collecting, and analyzing literature, hoping that forming research hypotheses will provide further explanations for current knowledge. Additionally, assistance is provided in establishing animal or cell models and utilizing the latest molecular biology techniques. If necessary, research equipment is developed. For example, gene array methods were used in the animal model of traumatic brain injury to screen for molecular markers for prognostic evaluation, and an optimized motor rehabilitation platform was self-developed and patented.

Innovation and research development are encouraged and supported, and resources are shared with collaborative hospitals and schools domestically and internationally. These include Taipei Medical University, Mackay Memorial Hospital and University, Shuang Ho Hospital, National Yang-Ming University, National Cheng Kung University, Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Chia Nan University of Pharmacy and Science, National Chin-Yi University of Technology, Harvard University, Waseda University, University of Wollongong, Academy of Military Medical Sciences in Beijing, Capital Medical University in Beijing, Jinan Military General Hospital in Shandong, and Guangzhou Military General Hospital.

Furthermore, Professor Lin is responsible for academic communications across the strait, serving as the convener for Taiwan, leading scientists and physicians to participate in academic exchanges and international conferences, and organizing international symposiums at the hospital. The Cross-Strait Cardiovascular Science Conference, with a 24-year history, will be continued by Dean Hong-Rong Lin and Professor Ching-Ping Chang in the future.
